Shelter and 24-Hour Crisis Line

The Women’s Community shelter provides safety and support for victims of domestic and sexual abuse and their children. Assistance with food, clothing and other basic needs is provided. While in shelter, residents work closely with staff in exploring options, receiving emotional support and advocacy.

What are the signs of abuse?

Domestic violence is more than just physical abuse. The power and control wheel describes the behaviors used in violent relationships.
Click on each area of the wheel to learn more.

Why do I feel this way?

Many abuse survivors experience stages of grief which may include a wide range of emotions. All emotions should be respected as important stages for healing to take place.

Shock/Disorganization

  • Disbelief
  • Embarrassment
  • Disorientation (Hassles with police, court, hospital, etc., prolong this stage)

Denial

  • "No one will understand."
  • "I can't live with myself." or "I can't handle this."
  • "It will go away if I don't think about it."
  • "This won't bother or affect me."

Depression/Guilt

  • Shame
  • Self-blame
  • Feeling that anger is wrong: "He really didn't mean to hurt me."
  • "I could have stopped it."
  • "I wish I were dead."
  • Hopelessness "I'll never feel better again."
  • "I think I'm going crazy."

You are NOT going crazy. This is normal, and there are people who can help. Anything you tell us remains completely confidential. Contact us-- First, Read:  Email Safety Warning
