If you have a friend. . .
. . . that you know or suspect is experiencing abuse in their relationship:

• Be there to listen; be supportive.
• Let them know there are safe places they can go when they are scared or need to think things through.
• Remind them of their obligation to keep their children safe.
• Be non-judgmental. Do not tell them to leave the relationship or ask why they keep going back. They have probably agonized over this many times.
• Do not add to their stress by verbally lashing out at their abuser. It is someone they may love and someone they want to love them.
• Tell them that they are okay.
• Suggest that they seek confidential help.

Volunteer Opportunities

DOMESTIC ABUSE PROGRAM

• Staffing shelter and crisis line, providing non-judgmental support and information about community resources.
• Spending time with residents and their children.
• Children's programming/ group.

SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIM SERVICES PROGRAM

• Volunteer advocates are available on an on-call basis to take calls from their home or meet with victims at the emergency room or police department, as needed.
• Court Watch: attend and report on local court hearings involving sexual assault and abuse.
